1. Aquaculture and impacts of
climate change
• Aquaculture is fast-growing and plays an
important role worldwide
• The world’s aquaculture production reaches
more than 82 million tons, in which, Viet Nam
contributes more than 4.2 million tons –
ranking 4 th in the world. Mekong Delta
contribute 70% of aquaculture area and
production of the Vietnam (FAO, 2020;
MARD, 2020)

Effects of Climate change on aquaculture in Mekong Delta
Perception of farmer on Climate change in Mekong Delta:
• 30-70% of shrimp farmers aware of the change of weather,
hydrology, salinity intrusion that have been giving negative effects
on shrimp aquaculture; 6-18% of fishermen could not deal with the
climate change by themselves; Most of freshwater fish famers have
no recognition to climate change and no solution taken for fish
culture (L T P Mai, 2016).
• 33-68% Pangasius catfish farmers at the upstream and midstream
aware of the climate change and there has been negative effects on
fish culture (N L Anh, 2016).

change, dated December 5, 2011

climate change and green growth for the period of 2016 – 2020, dated 31

• Decision No. 939/QD-TTg: Approving the master plan on socio-economic
• The Government resolution 120/NQ-CP, on Sustainable and Climate-
Resilient Development of the Mekong Delta of Viet Nam, dated November 17,
2017.

Mekong Delta region by 2030 with vision towards 2050, dated January 15,
