Simulation of nanostructures – applications in agriculture (A-12)

To design nanoparticles for nanoscale molecule sensors and novel zeolites as coating materials for slow-release fertilizers

1. To describe/predict the structures and characterize electronic properties, the phonon spectra, the cohesive energy of the materials using first principles methods.

2. To examine the nature of the interactions (between the nanostructures and the gas molecules) including adsorption geometries, adsorption energies, charge transfer, and electronic band structures, electronic transport properties, electric conductance, and resistance of the gas moleculars absorption graphene-like nanoribbons.

3. To ascertain the most potential structures of the graphene-like nanoribbons and noble nanoparticles for developing the molecular sensors which can quickly detect contaminants and other products of agricultural processes such as controlled atmosphere (CA) storage,  hydroponic vegetable cultivation, and soil management. Detection of bio-molecules will also be examined as it is rather important in controlling the quality of agricultural products.

4. To develop zeolite structures as coating materials that are able to slow down the diffusion coefficients of NPK fertilizer used in urban agriculture or agriculture without soil.
